Gallery and Museum Visits (V&A, Science and natural history museums)

Reflection

I had the opportunity to visit some main galleries and museums, whilst in London during the break, this was a great chance to view the way these establishments displayed work in order to get across the narrative of there history. I noticed that different sections of the museums employ different mechanisms for display in order to get the best from the object. For example the ancient artefacts, and ww1 & ww2 objects have been placed in glass cases, and arranged either in the form of a grid; with all the objects equal distance apart. This method of display allows all objects to be shown with equal emphasis on all forms. In some cases, objects are put out into arrangements that demonstrate there function and practical uses. The accompanying text is shown in the form of clear cut labels and window stickers. This simplifies the display allowing the viewer more room to view and engage with the objects. Critically speaking I find that a simplistic way of arranging and displaying objects is often the most effective when organising archival items, to much fuss distracts from the objects and confuses the conversation they have with each other. I will be keeping these way of display in mind when curating exhibitions throughout this unit.
