Traces: Memory and Indexicality book scans

Reflection

Through-out this text I have understood the following concepts, the ghostly transference of memory can be placed onto a object, yet it may not be reality that we are seeing. Myth can create a narrative for the object when coupled alongside careful arrangement and display. Furthermore objects are comparable to tactile photographs that hold within themselves a part of there owner. Whether as a display of taste or as a connection between individuals, object have the power to join together generations. The imaginary status of a relic when depicting a relative increases and metamorphosis from an object of function to and object of mourning and remembrance. However this magical quality goes both ways when the object is photographed, it again transforms into an archived memory, as by taking the photograph the individual is stating that there is something important to document and replicate to multiple viewers. Therefore robbing the object of some of its innate substances. In conclusion, objects continuously act as the bridge between the living and the dead, offering us traces of identity into a life past lived. The traces inside an object act as messages from the grave and portray complex narratives that are a combination of truths and myths.
