Clam and Porridge and Casting Sculptures

                                      Clam Shell and Porridge Sculptures

Reflection

This string of images are the result of a fortune casting performance, I chose to perform this ritual on a tiled floor so  to act as a grid, that It would be able to track where the chicken bones and gemstones lay in relation to each other. Each gemstone has specific properties that are relevant to it, such as protection, banishing negative energy, health etc. By casting them in this fashion I can begin to see a narrative emerging. Using materials such as bones, stones and hair has a historical relevance to it, and it is those customs that I am attempting to preserve. The clam and porridge sculptures, provide metaphors of life a death, as the oats sit in the shell of the clam, like a bed of sorts that would in some cases nurture the growth of a pearl. In place of a pearl (an item of great worth) sits a gemstone, not as rare but still as beautiful to some I tried out a few different looks before settling on the last image. The Juxtaposition occurs when the bones are placed inside, resembling a wall of death. Creating a tool of sorts, the item could be used for symbolising the two main sides of existence, and play a part in ceremonial behaviour of a shamanic group.
