Decoding Sculpture - Meaningful Play

Decoding Sculpture

Reflection

Playing around with the use of objects to create narratives, I brought some weighing scales from a local charity shop. What I like about them is the concept of justice and balance that they give off, by placing objects on to the scale I am weighting them up to each other. This action comments on the forms and their inherent worth as well as beginning to create a dialogue between the two forms. In a lot of these experiments a narrative of mortality seems to arise, the donkey a symbol of servitude, the bees wax, a symbol of hard-work and restoration as well as a play on words 'none of your bees-wax' on the scale with a book entitled 'An Expensive way to Die' all hint at the condition of humanity and the eventual mortality of everyone we know. I will be developing these images further with the use the photography studio in order to get the best from the images.
