Janet Cardiff - Artist Research

Janet Cardiff

Reflection

When first being introduced to the work of Janet Cardiff I was transferred to an different place. Her work particularly her sound pieces, lift you into the another world. The things that she points of in the space creates a sense of bonding between you and the artist, as she shares not only her observations but her opinions. The intimate nature of the voice acts like  a signature that tells you about the character of the person, Cardiff captures this and allows you to get to know your guide. The space that the artist displays the word is critical to the resulting sound. Each location the work is played into (and every time it is played) creates a unique experience as all of the conditions can never be replicated exactly again. The way the sound bounces off of the environment changes and the way people exist in the space creates a fusion between sound and sculpture. This fusion is very relevent to my ongoing practise and ties into the work I produced last year. I intend to experiment more with sound in the future, however for now I will be continuing my investigation with object and narrative.
