Richard Long - Artist Research

Artist : Richard Long

This piece, entitled 'A Line by Walking'  was my first introduction to the work of Richard Long's. Strikingly effecting, this line was made as means of documenting a journey and exploring space, through employing natural materials to trace the exact way his feet tread Long starts a form of exchange. However this wander-lust of Longs extends far beyond a line, taking him on many expeditions up and down the country. Although it is easy to be awe inspired by the magnitude of a lot of Longs Sculptural works, my main inspiration from the catalogue of Longs, must be the way he documents and displays his pieces, from sculptural rock formations, to poetry about the places and journey's he has been on, or maps with planned routes on. There is a clear relationship between all the facets of work that Long displays and evidence of careful thinking beforehand. A relationship of give and take form the environments he explores. Linking back to my own practice I will be exploring the notion of give and take within my own concerns of the heritage, preservation and reexamination of after the fact events by taking something from an object or location and placing or giving something back to in, this trade off creates and physic link between the present day and the past, and as we are forever moving forward in time the links are continuously being strengthened.
